Thank You Notes

The job interview process doesn’t end after your interview. Sending a thank you note to a potential employer is just as important and impactful as all the steps before. It makes you memorable, lets the employer know that you have set intentionality behind your application, and is a great professional practice.

These don’t have to be mailed to the employer, but sending a digital thank you note will be just fine. Here’s how to do it!

1. Send an email to everyone you meet in the interview. Be sure to get their first and last name, and remember things about the interview to include in the email. This adds a personal touch and shows them that you were actively engaged throughout the interview and paying attention. A great practice to implement is after each interview, as soon as you get in your car or back home, jot down some notes about the interview that you could use in your thank you note.

2. Spell check, spell check, spell check. I cannot stress this enough. Proofread and spell-check the thank you note, so that you are not sending a generic one to the employer, and you are making efforts to remember the names, titles, and positions of everyone at the company. Have someone else proofread, or print out a copy and proofread, as you tend to catch errors easier this way.

3. Do not text. Remember, these folks are not your friends, they are your potential colleagues and you have to treat them as such. They also may have given you their number, however, in sending a thank you note, email is the best and most professional option. Create formality as you are entering a potential workplace so that you establish your professionalism early and often.

Thank-you notes should be sent within 24 hours of meeting everyone, so that you don’t let too much time apart between the first meeting and engagement. Finally, while you are waiting on a response regarding employment, be sure to follow everyone you meet on LinkedIn. This is a great way to build and establish connections in a professional way.

Making yourself stand out takes a few simple steps, and a thank you note is the perfect way to show your professional intentions to a potential employer.
